Wisma Bapa Malaysia

Wisma Bapa Malaysia is the old Sarawak's State Legislative Assembly Building. Located in Petra Jaya, Kuching, Sarawak Malaysia, it housed the august institution from August 1976 until May 2009. It has currently been replaced by the New Sarawak State Legislative Assembly Building located next to The Astana, on the banks of the Sarawak River.

The Sarawak State Assembly is the oldest august institution in existence in Malaysia.

Wisma Bapa Malaysia was designed to be similar to the Malaysian Houses of Parliament in Kuala Lumpur in many aspects. Opened in 1976, it also hosted the Conference of Rulers in the same year.

History

Since its inception in August 1976, the Wisma Bapa Malaysia complex, sited on 90 acres (360,000 m2) of beautifully landscaped and manicured gardens, has served parliamentary democracy well. The many State Legislative Assembly sittings held in the august House over a period of 33 years have contributed to the progress of Sarawak.

As the oldest august institution in Malaysia, the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly was established after its inaugural meeting in Bintulu, Sarawak on 8 September 1867.

The foundation stone of the Wisma Bapa Malaysia complex was laid by the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, on 30 August 1973 at the satellite township of Petra Jaya.

The building was completed in 1976 and officially opened by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Yahya Petra in August 1976 followed by the Rulers' Conference in the Wisma Bapa Malaysia complex. The three-floor which can accommodate about 1,000 people, the State Legislative Assembly chambers with 160 seats and a gallery for 224 people.
